Punctuation Inquiry: Commas!

Today we finally explored some of those rules that come with pesky commas.  When are you supposed to use them?

We looked through our books and found many places that writers are using commas.  After we found some examples from published authors, we grouped them based on some common features.

We even created our own rules and names for commas!

Some of our comma types are:
  • The Interjection Comma (Hey, where are you going?)
  • The Place Comma (Manila, Philippines)
  • The Comma of Time (A few days later, they decided to check the mailbox.)
  • The Conjunction Comma (We love Messi, but we also love Ronaldo.)
  • The Listing/Many Things Comma (Bob, Joey, and Sam went to the store.)
  • The Adding Comma (Grace, age 50, was feeling tired.)
  • The Talking Comma ("I asked you nicely," Whitney muttered.)

We've come a long way from our beginnings of this unit! We've learned so much about punctuation and we're starting to use more in our writing to help show emotion and create cool effects.

Go Little Minions!
