What is Culture?

This is a huge question that we discussed in class this week: What is culture?  What are parts of culture and what aren't?  We generated the list on the board of things that are elements of culture.

Once we explored the idea of what culture was, we learned a little about each other using our clock partners and finding similarities and differences and reporting back to the class.  We answered big questions like:

  • What is "home"?
  • Why does my family celebrate certain holidays and not others?
  • What foods are usually present at family get togethers? Why these foods?
We began making "Cultural Identity Arms" yesterday and they are turning out amazing!  The kids are filling them with symbols that represent their culture.  Each arm is different, but have similar elements.

Try discussing with your child why your family celebrates certain holidays and has your specific set of values.   Where did these come from?  Why do we hold on to them?

Please come check them out in the hallway!
