Our class is starting to explore multiplication, but before we begin using strategies and investigating what multiplication is, I thought it might be helpful for students to identify their own feelings and thoughts about multiplication. That's exactly what we did today using an Emotions Tree.
Students looked at the tree and journaled about which "blob man" they feel represents them and why they chose that blob man. The interpretations were interesting and very unique to each learner! Some observations:
"I'm climbing the tree because I don't really get multiplication yet, but I'm learning."
"I'm the happy guy at the top of the tree because I know how multiply and feel confident!"
"I'm the guy who's dropping the other blob man out of the tree because sometimes I forget how to multiply and forget what I'm doing.
Some students wanted to share their ideas with the class and it was a great reflection to begin our unit!
Students continued to think about how they will challenge themselves during this math unit. Many students were able to think of some great ideas to help push themselves and deepen their understanding of multiplication!
